Sie können's nicht mehr lassen. Der derbe Philister stellt sich die Freuden des Himmels unter dem Bilde einer Kirmeß, einer Hochzeit, einer Reise oder eines Balls vor: der sublimirte macht aus dem Himmel eine prächtige Kirche mit schöner Musik, vielem Gepränge, mit Stühlen für das gemeine Volk parterre, und Kapellen und Emporkirchen für die Vornehmern.

Однажды вечером 5 августа 1705 года Иоганн Себастьян Бах, здешней Новой церкви органист, прогуливался по улицам Лейпцига. На углу стояла компания гопников. Самый наглый, по имени Гайерсбах, загородил дорогу органисту.

— Дядя, дай закурить!

— Не курю! — лениво бросил Бах, не выпуская изо рта трубки.

— Тогда дай двадцать крейцеров на питание бедному флейтисту.

— Ты играешь на флейте так, что все ослы тебе завидуют.

Обиженный флейтист замахнулся кулаком. Бах выхватил шпагу и нанёс укол в левое подреберье гопника.

— А-а-а! — завыл раненый. — Смотрите все, как органисты унижают флейтистов. Он мне камзол порвал!

Гопник исходил слюнями, слезами и соплями. Друзья утешали его.

Бах гордо удалился, помахивая шпагой, как дирижёрской палочкой.

Лет 25 назад снимали дачу у одного ветерана войны. Назовем его Елпидифор. Это был холостой алкоголик. Он рассказывал, чем занимался во время войны. Он служил в СМЕРШе. Сам он говорил так: «Ну, это было вроде советской СС». Во время боевых действий задача смершевцев была собирать оружие на поле боя. Это официально. Неофициально они обыскивали трупы и забирали себе всё ценное. То и дело посылали посылки домой. Наш герой сколотил себе вот эту дачу, где мы жили тем летом. Огромный двухэтажный дом с большим участком. После окончания военных действий задачей СМЕРШа стал обыск всех встречных местных гражданских на предмет обнаружения оружия. Понятно, что никакого оружия у них не было. Все солдаты уже были в плену, а гражданским оружие ни к чему. Так что занимались просто грабежом, отнимая все ценности. У каждого смершевца были карманы набиты деньгами. Закончил войну он в Вене. Рассказывал, как дрались с американцами в кино и ресторанах. Это были единственные боевые действия, в которых он сам принимал прямое участие.

A curious incident in the Moscow underground

I was standing on the platform waiting for the train with a book in hand. When the train came, I did not notice anything special about it but the car stopping before me being a little bit darker inside than usual. It is only when the train started off, that I perceived that the lights were put out. It was an absolute darkness in the car. By my side there was a group of young people – three or four girls and a youth. When I was entering, I saw that all the girls were looking at the boy with a clearly understandable interest indicating that he had not yet made up his mind who he wanted to be with. I should inform you all, ladies and gentlemen, that in most cases I act with impetuosity, forgetting all prudence. At that very moment I also proceeded offhandedly. I placed my hand on the thigh of the nearest girl. She did not draw back nor push off my hand. In the dark she could not see who the attacker was and probably thought it was her acquaintance. I began stroking her thigh making a sortie to the backside. She did not move. During the whole haul I traveled all over the girl’s thigh, and took away the hand only when the train began to slow down showing that the station is near. When the train stopped, I was standing still absorbed in a book. At the same time I was observing the young people in an underhand way. The girl in question was looking at the boy with a winsome smile, trying to show to him that she did not object to his advances, obviously hoping to have become his choice at last. The youth was looking at the girl indifferently.

Too bad I will never know the sequel of the relations among those young people.
